CHINESE NEW YEAR
Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. The festival begins on the first day of the first lunar month and ends on the 15th. This year’s Chinese New Year is the year of the boar and my first Chinese New Year. So without further ado: “Happy Chinese New Year everyone!” – Kiran
MUNDAN CEREMONY
The mundan ceremony is a Hindu rite, or sanskara, in which a boy receives his first haircut. This sanskara is performed typically during the first year of age when the child’s hair is shaved. In Hindu tradition, the hair from birth is associated with undesirable traits from past lives. Thus at the time of the mundan, the child is freshly shaved to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future.
Like Dad, I enjoy starting the morning with a warm cup of espresso and an almond biscotti. (“What?! No almond biscotti!”) – Kiran
Guess who’s valentine I was yesterday? My Po-Po’s! – Kiran
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY
In honor of this grand and romantic holiday, I am giving hugs and kisses to everyone who comes by our house today. Remember it’s first come first serve, so act now! – Kiran
Valentine’s Day is, of course, a major national holiday, an earthshaking news event, and one of the most important things going on in the world tomorrow. Remember to buy your sweetheart (me) plenty of chocoloates (for me) and candy (for me). – Kiran
WALKING a film by Kiran Thakur
[Editor’s Note: Remember to turn on your volume.]
Here I am brainstorming ideas for my new zine “Word Ninja!”. What’s a zine? Well, before everyone and their mom and their mom’s mom had a blog, everyone had a zine. But the thing about zines is that they really require effort: stapling, photocopying, etc. But in the pioneering spirit of 1994, “Word Ninja!” plans to pay tribute to zine-sters of the past with our first issue aptly titled ‘Oldies, but Goodies’. Look for it on the magazine racks of your local grocers next month. – Kiran
